In the hilly Überetsch valley of Alto Adige, Italy, on a sunny slope above St. Michael in Eppan, lies the vineyard of Hof Gandberg, the source of the Thomas Niedermayr wine estate.
The estate is small (5ha), with only 2ha under vine. The vineyards are located 500 to 530 meters above sea level and have been organically farmed since the mid-1980’s. “Healthy things can only grow in healthy surroundings“ was always the creed of Rudolf Niedermayr, Thomas’ father.
As the estate passed from father to son, the family’s basic conviction to farm Hof Gandberg in an ecological and sustainable manner has remained constant. Biodiversity in the vineyard can be seen in the health of the soil with the proliferation of plants between the vines, ducks and chickens roam freely and fresh vegetables and herbs are also grown.
When Thomas took over the estate in 2012, his vision expanded beyond natural farming to natural winemaking – letting the whole process of wine production from the grape to the bottle unfold naturally. He not only welcomes the challenge of natural winemaking but embraces it. Assistant winemaker, Christine Wolfram, joined Thomas in 2019 and has brought new innovation to their portfolio.
Grapes are organically farmed and hand harvested.
